I’ve been ratcheting down on screen time after being very lax over the holidays. One fun outcome has been that Sam has been channeling all his video game lust into creating his own “mazes.” They’re not really mazes, but adventures for me to send a character that he creates on, with obstacles, challenges, and opportunities for earning extra points. They get very elaborate. They’re usually drawn, but today I got to do one made out of LEGOs as well.

We got a piano! I’ve been dying for a piano since we moved in, and it finally happened. It’s been so much fun to hear Hazel and Sam wander over to it over the course of the day, and play around on it, separately and together.
There are always all sorts of construction projects going on around here–forts made out of couch cushions, battlements created from whatever toys lend themselves to their vision, beading (oh my goodness the beading–unfortunately I don’t have any photos of this, but Hazel’s been very prolific).
We took advantage of a recent and rare sunny day to head down to Maury Island Marine Park–one of our favorite haunts, though we haven’t been in awhile. Sam had a great time skipping rocks. Hazel spent her time collecting them.
We just finished the second book in the Mysterious Benedict Society series. Hearing Sam explain the plot to my dad was so, so sweet.
LEGOs continue to be a never-ending source of fun. Sam saved up his allowance and bought a few small sets over the holidays. Sam loves building ships; Hazel loves building fantastic places–below you’ll see a barbecue restaurant she built for Darth Vader.
We took the kids bowling for the first time for our friend River’s 4th birthday party. Gone are the days of hand-scoring. Too bad–I remember feeling so accomplished once I’d finally figured it out. Now it’s all done automatically for you. But the bowling was fun!
We have a few new indoor playground apparati in the house–a balance board, a tumbling mat, some rings, and a trapeze/ladder. It’s great to have some spots for kids to get their energy out on rainy days.
We received lots of fun games for Christmas this year–games have never been that popular around here, but the new influx has gotten us all down on the floor playing. It’s been great.
